Joshua Loring is forced to flee his Jamaica Plain estate.

August 31, 1774

Com. Loring, a Loyalist and one of the so-called “Mandamus Councilors” who had been appointed by Gen. Thomas Gage to replace the Governor’s Council, is forced to take shelter in Boston Loring’s son, Joshua Jr., is subsequently appointed commissary of rebel prisoners in Boston. His wife, the former Elizabeth Lloyd, becomes the mistress of Gen. William Howe – reputedly with Loring Jr.’s consent.
